A good visual from our from Matthew Inman at The Oatmeal with a great suggestion for substituting a holiday for Bartolomé de las Casas instead of Christopher Columbus.

The Oatmeal’s visual also highlights some of my favorite lies that I was taught in public schools, such as “people thought Columbus would fall off the edge of the earth” or “Columbus discovered the New World”. Despite no one thinking the world is flat or the fact that there were people already lived in the New World. I’m a little surprised that the second grade version of myself didn’t ask “How did he discover a place that people already lived?” or remembering anyone else asking that very Eurocentric and racist question.
