Yesterday my wife and I watched Calvary. I believe that it had shown at a film festival that I didn’t make it to, so I’d been looking forward to it. The film is about an Irish priest who is threatened by a parishioner through the anonymity of the confessional. The parishioner claims that he had been molested by a priest for years, and is unable to seek his revenge on that man because the man is dead, so instead he’ll take it out on Father James, one week from that day.

During the course of the movie, the priest wrestles with his parishioners and neighbors who all seem to detest the Church but can’t find a reason to hate this particular priest. Each interaction seems to be someone goading Father James to slip up as the days tick by towards his looming death.

Although the dialog is often quite witty, it’s a dark film. I’d really recommend it.
