Al Jazeera America reports that “Thousands march in Paris rain against state of emergency” just a few days ago. From the article:
Jean-Baptiste Eyrault, of the Right to Housing movement, said: “Democracy is moving backwards … at the expense of judges and the rule of law, freedom to demonstrate and [freedom] of expression.”
These state-of-emergency powers are very reminiscent of America’s PATRIOT Act which gives governmental abilities to ignore constitutional projections. When the PATRIOT Act was passed and with any of it’s renewals, how much protest was there here? Not enough.
I hope the French are angrier than we have been.
