Neighboring city, Washington D. C., just passed a $15 an hour minimum wage. I’ve read some people’s opinions on the $15 an hour minimum wage the country over. Some people are for it and some people think that it’ll lead to job loss. What I do know is that there was a time in this country where a household could have a single earner and own property while living comfortably. A higher minimum wage is just one step at getting us closer to being back to that economic stability for everyone.
Also, the linked article above at dcist mentions the groups that are fighting for a ballot initiative to raise tipped wages to $15 an hour as well. This will, certainly, destroy tipped jobs. And I am completely for that. As someone who worked in restaurants for years, I know that having your bottom line rely on the generosity of strangers is not fiscal stability.
