I’m a regular reader of VICE and I’m incredibly supportive of their choice to remove comments from their site and the reasons as to why.

Unfortunately, website comments sections are rarely at their best. Without moderators or fancy algorithms, they are prone to anarchy. Too often they devolve into racist, misogynistic maelstroms where the loudest, most offensive, and stupidest opinions get pushed to the top and the more reasoned responses drowned out in the noise.

One of the qualifiers when I moved this site away from WordPress was for a platform that either had no function for comments at all or could have them disabled.

The best and most constructive conversations and feedback that I’ve had about this blog over the years (and, while I’m on the topic, my podcast) have come through email, not through social media or the comments sections.

Good on you VICE.
