From Boingboing’s Mark Frauenfelder, I found out that there is was some sort of slacktivist protest against Twitter, which has joined Facebook in being a digital toilet for horrible people who get brave behind the keyboard who then say horrible things to friends, family, and strangers alike.
The #DeactiDay manifesto:
August 17th is D-DAY
Show Twitter you won’t be a part of a place that tolerates bigotry and abusive information, specifically from Alex Jones. Deactivate your account on Friday, August 17th: Twitter has 30 days to make it right. After that, account deletions become permanent and Twitter has lost all of us for good. #DeactiDay
Personally, if all of the bad things in life happened to Alex Jones, I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it. But I trashed my Twitter account after taking a lengthy brake from it since it, like Facebook before it, wasn’t contributing anything positive to my life. And the negatives were from people who participated with Internet conversations with the same offensive, trollish behavior of Mr. Jones himself.
Not only has social media become garbage, but it is being used by foreign actors to undermine the sacred democratic processes of this country, and it doesn’t feel like the federal government or the amoral corporations that run them are putting forward any effort to change that.
Try Mastodon or dump it all.
